The Marion Sentinel Thursday April 25, 1907
The Late Wm G. Erwin
Wm G. Erwin was born Oct. 18th, 1832 in Wayne County, Ohio, and died April 21, 1907 in Marion, Iowa, after being in ill health for several months. He was, at the time of his death, seventy-four years, six months and six days old. He came to Iowa in 1859 on a visit and in 1860 returned to make this state his home. In 1861 he was united in marriage to Miss Martha E. Wallace. To this union three children were born, viz: Jennie, Lulu and Harley Erwin, who, with two grandchildren, and the wife and mother, survive. Of Mr. Erwin's family, three brothers and a sister remain. He became a member of the Presbyterian church in early manhood and for years was a worthy office-bearer in the church. Mr. Erwin was a man of the highest type of character. Devote to his family, identified with all that was best in the community in which he lived, he did much in the development of the community. One of the early settlers, he resolutely set about the securing of a home and the laying by a competence for old age. The largely attended funeral services in the Presbyterian church, Tuesday afternoon, testified to the high esteem in which Mr. Erwin was held.
The services were in charge of Rev. R. L. Campbell, president of Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, a former pastor, assisted by Rev. Jennings, the present pastor. Mrs. W.B. Sebern, Mrs. Benj. Bulkley, J.M. Thompson and W.B. Sebern furnished the music. J.D Robinson, J.W. Bowman, C.C. Dye, Arthur Taube, E.L. Fernow, Owen Fernow, W.T. Jackson and W.B. Sebern were the pall bearers.
Relatives and friends from out-of-town who attended the funeral were as follows: Calvin Erwin, a brother, of Wayne County, Ohio; Walter Erwin, a nephew, of Urich, Missouri; Mr. and Mrs. O.R. Meek, cousins, of Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. A.B. Strothers and Mrs. Robert Smyth, of Mt. Vernon; D.L. Morrow and sister, Miss Ella, of Ottumwa; L.E. Morrow and family, of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Rev. and Mrs. W.M. Evans, of Cedar Rapids, and Orlando Goudy, of Linn Grove.
