The Marion Weekly Register Thursday March 16, 1871
DIED.--March 5th, 1871, near Springville, at the residence of her Grandfather, James Dougney, Effie May, only child of John V. and Birdie Doudna of Cedar Rapids, aged 2 years 9 months and 14 days.
Death has entered our circle and taken from thence the fairest flour--the brighest gem--the pet of all. She was a child of rare promise, of bright intellect, and was from early infancy mature beyond her years.
Often were we told "we could not keep her that she was too good, too pure for this world, of sin, but we would not believe that our darling, our almost idolized Effie would be taken away, till the stern fact came with overwhelming force upon us. As the peacful[sic] sabbath day was fading away in the west, she gently breathed her last, and while we stood weeping around her lifeless form, she had caught the strains of sweetest music. Nature mourns but we know our darling is far better off. Words can not express the desolation of her parents. But sorrowful mourners, weep not; your Effie has escaped a thousand snares that would have attended her footsteps had she been spared to you.
Rather rejoice, "Another string has caught the strains above." It will be only a few short years till you will be called upon to take up your abode in the silent halls of death, if you receive the "well done" and your departed treasure with angelic form and golden harp will meet you at the portals of Heaven and welcome you to that "better land" where parting is unknown.
