WILLIAM CHALPHANT WAYT
William Chalphant Wayt was born of Quaker parents March 11, 1812 in Fayette county, Pennsylvania, and died in Kenwood Park, Iowa, June 29, 1899. In his youth he went to Philadelphia, and in his twenty-second year was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth McAllister. The loss of three children within thirteen months led Mr. Wayt to devote three years to the study of medicine and he became a very successful practitioner, following that profession for more than thirty years. As a result of an injury in a railroad accident about twenty-five years ago he was compelled to retire from active work and has since made his home with his children. Soon after his marriage he was converted to Christ and united with the Free Will Baptists, where he made his church home for a number of years, but for the last twenty years he has been a member of the Free Methodist church.
He and his family came to Iowa in 1856 and resided in Marion for several years, and then moved to Cedar Rapids. They had six sons and five daughters, of whom only two remain, J.J. Wayt of Kenwood Park, at whose home the father was visiting when the summons came, and W.B. Wayt of Sac City, Ia. On into his advanced years he continued to take an interest in general affairs.
Kindness was one of his special virtues. The funeral services were held at 3 p.m. June 30, at the residence of his son, and he was interred in the Marion cemetery, by the side of his wife, who had preceded him to the better country thirty-two years ago. Many will revere his memory.
