Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette Monday July 18, 1921
Mrs. Martha L. Gongwer, daughter of John and Sarah Smyth, was born in Evansville, Ind., March 22, 1852, and died July 12, 1921.
When she was a child the family moved to Benton county, Iowa, where, with the exception of a few years spent in Marion and Cedar Rapids, she lived the rest of her life.
On May 10, 1870, she married Joseph J. Gongwer, whose death occurred in 1915. Two children were born to them, one of whom Archie W. Gongwer, died at the age of fifteen years, in 1891. She is survived by a son, Ira J. Gongwer, two grandchildren, Ethel and Ruth Gongwer, and a number of nephews and nieces.
At an early age she became a christian and united with the Presbyterian church. She later transferred her membership to the Methodist, Episcopal church of which she remained an active, loyal and devoted member until the time of her death. Her many friends will continue to cherish the beautiful memory of her christian character. Her life has been a benediction to many and the world is purer and nobler for her having passed this way.
Four weeks before her death she suffered an attack of pleurisy which shortly developed into pneumonia. In spite of all that medical science and tender nursing could do her strength continued to fail. She expressed her desire to be with the Master and her wish was soon fulfilled as she quietly and peacefully gave up this life for that more abundant life.
The funeral services were held at the home of the deceased, nine miles west of Cedar Rapids, on the Lincoln Highway, July 14, at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. F.H. Weed, pastor of the St. James M.E. church, Cedar Rapids, conducted the funeral services. A mixed quartet composed of Miss Gibson, Mrs. Lawn Spurrier, Fred Spencer and Stanley Lubbock, furnished the music. Her body was laid to rest in Oak Shade cemetery, Marion.
