The Marion Register Wednesday October 23, 1901
Funeral Services and Obituary.
As noted in the REGISTER of that day the funeral services of the late Mrs. S.W. Durham were held at the family residence at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon. The services was conducted by Rev. Walter H. Reynolds, pastor of the Presbyterian church, and the music was in charge of the choir leader, Mr. John M. Thompson. There was a large attendance of friends and many members of the Old Settlers' association attended in a body. The interment was in the Oak Shade cemetery. The following obituary was read:
"Ellen Wolcott Durham was born in Geneseo, New York, Aug. 7th, 1819. She was a daughter of D. Augustus Wolcott and Nancy Cole, his wife. Through her father, whose mother was Sibyl Alden of Bennington, Vermont, she was a descendant of John Alden.
She removed when a child, with her parents, to Elyria, Ohio, where her father died. She came with her family to Iowa in 1841, to Franklin township, in this county, where she taught school. She also taught school in Marion. Two years after her arrival here she was married to Samuel W. Durham, with whom she lived for nearly fifty-eight years. She raised to man and womanhood six children. Her oldest son, Jefferson, who was a soldier in the late civil war, died thirty years ago. Five of her children survive her, four of whom were with her when she died. On account of serious sickness, her oldest daughter, Mrs. Alice Tillotson, of Moorhead, Minn., was unable to be here.
Mrs. Durham was stricken with paralysis last February, since which time she was helpless.
The floral tributes were beautiful, emblematic of the life of the deceased.
She will be remembered kindly and her memory cherished by all whose good fortune it was to be numbered among her acquaintances and friends.
