The Marion Pilot Thursday October 1, 1896
Obituary.
MRS. LAURA E. WIES
The funeral services of Mrs. Laura E. Wies, wife of Mr. Henry Wies, residing four miles northeast of Marion, who departed this life Sept. 23, 1896, took place at Prairie chapel, Friday afternoon, Sept. 25, 1896. The services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Walter Piper, who took for his text the 5th verse of the 31st Psalm. "Jesus Lover of My Soul," "Rock of Ages," and "Nearer My God to Thee," were sung by the choir. These hymns with the Psalm above mentioned were selected by the deceased before her death for the occasion.
Mrs. Wies was born at Mt. Eaton, Ohio, August 28th, 1861, and died Sept. 28, 1896, aged 35 years, 3 months, 5 days.
Mrs. Wies was left a motherless girl when about a year old. In the year of '66 the family moved to Freeport, Ills. There she grew into beautiful young womanhood and drew around her a large circle of acquaintances. At the age of twenty-two she came to Linn county, Iowa, and made her home with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Bear. It was here she made the acquaintance of Mr. Wies, her now bereft and sorrowing husband. They were married March 31st, 1887, and God blessed this union of happy nine years and over with four children, all of whom are living.
Mrs. Wies was a very modest woman, rather reserve in her manner, but kindhearted, loving and self-sacrificing for her home and her friends. A most devoted wife, loving mother and good neighbor, no burden was too heavy, no sacrifice too great for her to make for the comfort and happiness of her home, family and friends. Those who knew her best, loved her most.
Mr. Wies was converted to God in her youth. She gave evidence of spiritual life and christian experience, but like many others she failed to unite with some branch of Christ's church, and went back. In the early part of her sickness she renewed her consecration, accepted Christ as her saviour, and at a communion service held here, she with her husband united with Prairie chapel. Many bright testimonies were left as evidence of her christian life. Much religious instruction she gave to her family and friends. The thirst of her soul for God during her sickness is best expressed by the Psalmist, "As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God."
The morning before death came she sang in a clear voice, "Jesus Lover of My Soul," and after a few struggles, she sank to rest in the arms of her Saviour. Her work was done; her battles fought; the victory won. She leaves a husband, four children, a father, stepmother, three brothers and one sister to mourn their loss. To her it is gain of eternal life.
