VETERAN DIRECTOR OF LOCAL BANDS IS DEAD
Emery E. McElhinney, 78, of 1211 Sixth avenue, for many years a well known band leader, died at a local hospital at 3 a.m. Tuesday after a lingering illness. He was born near Mount Vernon Feb. 12, 1861 and had resided in Cedar Rapids for thirty-five years. For two years he taught band music at Cornell college and also directed bands at West Branch and North Liberty. For many years he was leader of the Knights of Pythias band and the Cedar Rapids municipal band. A cornetist[sic], he was also a member of Jacob Schmidt's band. He was a member of Star of the West lodge, K.P. and of the United Brethren church. Surviving is his wife Luvinia[sic].
Funeral services will be held in the Beatty chapel Thursday at 3 p.m. conducted by the Rev. J.T. Stewart and the Knights of Pythias. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial park. Friends may call at the chapel Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.
