The Marion Sentinel Thursday March 17, 1904
CALVIN H. WHITCOMB.
Died at his home on North 9th street, in Marion, March 19, 1904, after a lingering illness of three years, Calvin H. Whitcomb. The deceased was born March 8, 1828, in Berkshire Co, Mass. In 1851 he was married to Ann Busby, who came with his father's family to this county in 1856, and settled near Marion. In 1858 he purchased a farm five miles northwest of Marion, near Wesley Chapel, where he resided until 1869, when he purchased a fine prairie farm north of Wild Cat Grove, which he finely improved and brought it up to a high state of cultivation. He made this his home until five years ago, when his health began to fail, he left the farm and removed to Marion where he has continued to reside until the time of his death. Nov. 22, 1864, his wife died leaving the husband and three children to mourn her departure, two children having preceded her by a few months. May 17, 1866, he was joined in marriage to Mary E. Bunting, who with six children born to them of this marriage, and three by a former marriage, survive him.
The deceased was converted in early life and joined the Baptist church in Marion where he continued his membership until his removal to his farm in Maine Township, when he with his family transferred to the Jordan's Grove Baptist church, their membership. This was his church home for over thirty years; on his removal to Marion he again made the Marion church his home. He was ever a loyal and devoted member of the church of his choice. He held some of the most responsible positions and held the office of deacon at the time of his death. He was a man of few words but was always a wise and safe councelor[sic] in all that pertained to the best interests of the church he loved. In his death the church has lost one of its most faithful and devoted members. Linn county one of its pioneers who has done much toward developing its industries and adding to its wealth and the family a bountiful provider, a devoted husband and father.
"Blessed are the dead who die din the Lord."
