The Marion Sentinel Thursday January 28, 1909
Obituary of Ella J. Hoagland.
Mrs. Ella J. Hoagland was born in Pennsylvania Dec. 1st, 1849. She passed away in the city of Los Angeles, Cal., Jan. 15th, 1909, leaving an aged father living in Covington, Penn.; one brother in Fredonia, Kan.; three sons and one daughter. She united with the Baptist church in childhood and when she came to this city thirty-two years ago, united with this church, of which she has been a faithful and devoted member all these years. Her religion was exemplified in her every-day life, and many rise up to call her blessed. No person in the church or neighborhood could have been missed more than Sister Hoagland when she was stricken down with what proved a fatal disease, two years ago. She regretted that she could no longer be in active work for the Lord, and said if she was spared she would do more for Him than ever before. Many prayers were offered for her recovery, if it was according to the will of God or that she might have grace to bear her affliction. The Lord graciously answered with, "My Grace is Sufficient For Thee." For in her long and painful illness there was no rebellious murmuring, but a calm, sweet confidence in God her Saviour proved by the texts of scripture she had on the wall of her room for each day of the week, showing the ground of her faith and hope which was always bright, because founded on the eternal word of God. She was loyal to her Lord in adversity as well as prosperity, in sickness as well as in health. And the Lord verified His word, "As Thy Day, So Shall Thy Strength Be," until at last He said, "It Is Enough, Come Up Higher," and the watchers said she is dead. But we are always confident that whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord. We are willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord, (1 Cor. 5, 6, 8,) in the Father's house of many mansions, John 14: 1-3.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Marion, Iowa, Jan. 18th, conducted by the pastor, Rev. H.F. McDonald.
