The Marion Sentinel Thursday September 27, 1906
--The death of Mrs. Rachel Smith, generally known as "Grandma" Smith, occurred Thursday, Sept. 20, 1906, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Cone. She was one of the earliest pioneers of this city, being over ninety-five years of age. She was born June 15, 1811, at Coventry, N.Y., at which place, on May 26, 1829, she was married to Mr. Harry Smith, who died Dec. 18, 1879, in this city. Eight children were born to them, but one of whom survives, Mrs. Frances Lucore, of Hastings, Neb. Her funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at the Congregational church, of which she had been a life-long member. There was a large attendance of friends at the funeral, especially of the older citizens. It was her wish that she be buried from the church, which was decorated for the Harvest Home services, to be held on Sunday. The harvested grain and other decorations were very appropriate to the ripened age of the deceased.
