Obituaries
Smith Fairley was born Aug. 21st, 1826, in Lawrence, county, Indiana. He entered into rest Friday, March 22, 1901; aged 74 years, 7 months and 1 day. He came to Linn county, Iowa, Oct. 25, 1853. On the 20th of December, 1855 he was married to Prudence Brown Stiffler, who preceded him to that better land July 16, 1884. Five children came to bless their home: Elizabeth, Isabelle, James, Osie and John, all of whom are living to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father. Besides these, are two brothers, two sisters and thirteen grandchildren.
During the last years of his life he been tenderly cared for by his son James and daughter Osie. Mr. Fairley has been a great sufferer for years, and how patiently and uncomplainingly he has borne his sufferings! He was not a member of any church, but he gave evidence to a neighbor a few years ago that all was well with him, and when it was the Lord's will to take him, it would be all right. And his converse with other neighbors proved him to be a christian and in sympathy with the church. Smith Fairley was a man of strong convictions; with him right was right and wrong was wrong. He was a quiet and unassuming man; a good citizen, a kind neighbor and a true friend.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Locke Sunday afternoon.
