The Marion Register Tuesday November 9, 1915
CAPT. ALEXANDER
Capt. J.S. Alexander died Friday evening, after a long illness.
He was born near Mount Vernon May 21, 1842.
He was a student in Cornell College.
He enlisted in Company A, 31st Iowa Infantry and was commissioned Captain of the Company July 29th, 1864.
After his return he engaged in the lumber business in Marion. He sold his business to the Green Bay Lumber Company, and Frank Hilliard was appointed manager.
He was for a time member of the Marion school board and served as Councilman from the 3rd ward.
He served as president of the First National Bank and was elected State Senator two terms. The last office he held was that of postmaster.
His wife whose maiden name was Miss Anna Giffen, a sister of the late Judge J.D. Giffen, died several years ago.
HE was a member of Robert Mitchell Post and was three terms Commander.
Four children, Jay J[sic]. Alexander, of Pocatello, Idaho, Dr. J.S. Alexander, of Omaha, and Mesdames John P. Mentzer and J.G. Blisch[sic], of Chicago, survive and were all present when the final summons came.
He was a life long member of the Presbyterian church at which his funeral services were held Monday at 10:30 a.m.; conducted by Rev. Ensign, pastor of the church. The ritualistic services of the G.A.R. were held at the cemetery. His relatives and many friends in Marion and Linn county mourn his departure. The bereaved family have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.
There was a very large attendance of the G.A.R., W.R.C., Boy Scouts and citizens at the funeral services at the church and also at the cemetery.
