The Marion Sentinel Thursday August 10, 1905
The late Mrs. J.S. Alexander
------------------------------
The following obituary notice of Mrs. J.S. Alexander was written by her pastor, Rev. Robert Lincoln Campbell.
Mrs. Anna C. Alexander, wife of Capt. J.S. Alexander, passed away Wednesday evening, Aug. 2nd, 1905, at 11:20 at her home on 8th ave., in Marion Iowa, after a lingering illness. All that medical skill and affectionate care could do was done to relieve the sufferer and restore her to health, but she gradually failed.
She was born in Northumberland county, Pennsylvania, June 5th, 1850[sic]. She was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas M. Giffen. She was married to Capt. J.S. Alexander Jan. 27th, 1875, and to this union four children were born viz: Jay G. Alexander, of Tekoa, Washington; Dr. J.S. Alexander, of Omaha; Mary A., wife of John P. Mentzer, of Chicago and Miss Clara Louise Alexander, of Marion. Besides her husband and children she is survived by her brother, William M. Giffen, of Central City, Iowa, and her sister, Mrs. W.A. Durham, of Watsontown, Pa.
All her family were by her bed as she fell asleep in Jesus.
She united with the Presbyterian church Jan. 28th, 1877, and was always an active, aggressive worker. A liberal supporter in all the church undertook. She was a woman of strong religious convictions and always absolutely fearless in standing for the right and the highest, and best interests of the community. She loved her home and her family, and the passage of scripture used for the basis of the funeral address seemed especially appropriate: "She looketh well to the ways of her own household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Prov. 31:27."
The funeral service was conducted Friday afternoon at the home by Rev. Walter H. Reyholds, D.D., of Omaha, a former pastor and a personal friend, assisted by Rev. Robert L. Campbell, the present pastor of the church. Both spoke of the noble character Mrs. Alexander bore and the peace and rest she had now found.
Mrs. Myrtle Bowman Sebern sang a very beautiful and well rendered solo. Many flowers were placed about the casket by loving friends. The pall bearers were Messrs. J.C. Fulkerson, C.H. Marshall, J.W. Bowman, H.S. Scampton, H. Robinson and R.C. Jackson. Among those present from a distance were Wm. M. Giffen wife and daughter, of Central City, Ia.; Robert J. Alexander, son and daughter, D.L. Boyd and wife, Mrs. Grove; Mr. and Mrs. Turner and Wm. Gamble, of Mt. Vernon; Wm. Smythe and wife, Jay J. Smythe and wife, and a large number of business men of Cedar Rapids.
