FIRE VICTIM SERVICES HWERE
{first part cannot be read} Goins officiating.
Firemen were called to his home at Thirty-first street and Fifth avenue at 10:25 p.m. The fire had been discovered by a group of young boys who were on their way home after a basketball game. When firemen arrived, the east and south sides of the one-story frame structure was ablaze and the inside was described as a "roaring inferno" by Chief Roy Cooper.
Cooper said a brother-in-law of the victim had suggested that Rose might be trapped in the bedroom on the northwest side of the house. Firemen immediately cut a hold in the wall, but discovered no one on the bed and an intense blaze prevented entry into the room.
When the fire was sufficiently under control to allow entrance, the fire fighters found the body lying on the opposite side of the room from the bed covered with debris. According to Coroner Robert Brosh, death occurred as the result of suffocation and severe burns.
In his report to the State Fire Marshal, Chief Cooper stated that the fire was caused by an over-heated stove and accidental death due to fire.
Cooper said that water to fight the blaze was secured from two wells, which were pumped dry, and that trucks made three trips to the nearest hydrant one-half mile from the fire to fill booster tanks.
Born in Marion, April 27, 1912, Rose was married to Evelyn Mae Millis on Sept. 1, 1934. He was employed by the Linn County Produce company here.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his father, Everett Rose, and a stepson, Pfc. LeRoy Simonsen, who is now serving with the Army in Japan. He is also survived by two sisters: Mrs. Bessie Scott and Mrs. Ethel Hanson, both of Marion; two brothers, George of Marion and Ralph of Kennewick, Wash.
Pallbearers were John Welter, Karl Johnston, Theodore Davis, Hannibal Davis, Walter Nieland and Floyd Williams. Burial was in Oak Shade Cemetery.
