Mrs. Hastings Dies Following Long Illness
Mrs. Dwight D. Hastings, 1145 Maplecrest Dr., passed away at 8:50 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, at a Cedar Rapids hospital following a long illness.
She was born Carolyn Marie Kemmann, daughter of Henry and Marie Louise Kroeger Kemmann on April 17, 1896 at Lowden.
Mrs. Hastings graduated from Iowa State Teachers college and took post graduate work at the State University of Iowa. She taught for ten years in Iowa high schools. She was married March 22, 1924 at Iowa City to Mr. Hastings and they moved to Marion from Iowa City sixteen years ago.
Baptized and confirmed in Trinity church at Lowden she joined the Presbyterian church following her marriage and was a member of the Marion Presbyterian church where she was active in all phases of church work. She had also been active in the following community projects: Community Chest, P.T.A.; cub scouts; camp fire girls and the Marion band boosters.
Surviving in addition to her husband are three children: Chaplain Don D. Hastings of Sampson Air Force Base at Geneva, N.Y.; Eugene G. Hastings at home and Mrs. Milton A. (Kathryn) Stiller of St.[sic] grandchildren: Mark Stiller and Louis, Mo. She also leaves three[sic] Steven and Daniel Hastings and five brothers: Walter Kemmann, Clarence; Hugo Kemmann, Marion, Pa.; Arthur Kemmann, Tipton; Clarence Kemmann in Korea; Lawrence Kemmann, Denver, Colo. and two sisters: Mrs. Guy (Clara) Wherren, Burbank, Cal. and Mrs. Fred (Ella) Schindler, Cedar Rapids.
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. by the Rev. R. Franklin Galloway at the Marion Presbyterian church. Burial will be in Oak Shade cemetery. It was her suggestion that friends if they so desired, donate to the altar fund for the new chapel at the Marion Presbyterian church in lieu of flowers.
It was also requested that her casket remain closed.
