Services Held Sunday For Mattie E. Coons

Mrs. Mattie Estelle Coon[sic], 68 years old, passed away at a Cedar Rapids hospital early last Friday morning after a short illness and funeral services were held Sunday from the Yocom chapel. She was the widow of John Coons, and had lived in the county most of her life.
As Mattie Estelle Austin, daughter of William and Julalia Lucore Austin, she was born May 7, 1886, in Marion. When a girl she united with the Prairie Chapel Methodist church. She was married to John Coons Dec. 23, 1885. To this union seven children were born. Six of her children and five grandchildren were with her at the time of her death.
For the last year she had been making her home on a farm near Central City. Her husband and one daughter, Mrs. Ina Mae Slaughter, her parents, one sister, Anna, and a brother, Sam, have preceded her in death.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Ed Paul of Decorah, Mrs. William Mason of Central City, Mrs. K.D. Saunders of Prairieburg, three sons, William of LaPlate, Mo., John at home, and Austin of near Marion, five grandchildren, five sisters, Mrs. Margaret Gano of Faith, S.D., Mrs. Kate Crew of Omaha, Mrs. Sade[sic] Scott of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Ina Dye Minor of Marion and Mrs. Merle Jordan of Central City, four brothers, William B. Austin of Cedar Rapids, Ed Austin of Alexander S.D., Frank Austin of Great Falls, Montana, and John C. Austin of near Marion.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Yocom chapel with the Rev. Ernest C. Allen, pastor of the Central City Methodist church and a former pastor of Prairie Chapel, was in charge. Burial was in Oak Shade cemetery.
