DEATH OF AN OLD RAILROADER
James Nield Who Brought First Passenger Train Into Marion
James Nield died suddenly Friday afternoon, of apoplexy, at the home of Mrs. Emma Parker, where he and his wife had rooms. Mr. Nield was owner of the Marion Grocery store, and moved to Marion from Cedar Rapids about a year ago.
In his earlier life, Mr. Nield was a railroad man, and as an engineer brought the first passenger train into Marion from Savanna in the early seventies. He followed this work for twenty-four years until failing health forced him to take up something else. He was engaged for a time in the meat business with Jas. Hoagland and later with A.L. Hutchinson. He lived in Belle Plaine and Cedar Rapid for several years before returning here.
Mr. Nield was a native of England, coming to the United States with his parents, while a small child. He was born September 5, 1840[sic], and spent his boyhood days in New York and Wisconsin. In 1862 he was married to Miss Jane Dangmeir, of Janesville, Wis., and to them were born four children, three of whom survive, James D., of Evanston, Ill.; Herbert, of Sioux City, and Cora, of Minneapolis. Mr. Nield married a second time in 1878, his wife being Miss Mary Crowley, of Marion, who survives him.
Brief funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from Cathcart's chapel, and the body was taken to Racine, Wis., Monday for burial.
