Joe Mitchell Ends Life By Taking Gas

Poor Health Believed To Be Cause For Suicide

Joe Mitchell, age 53, proprietor of the Lunch Cafe, took his own life, with gas at about 8:30 today in his home at 729 Fifth avenue. He had been in poor health for sometime[sic] and it is believed that this was the reason for his act.
He was found by Mrs. Shaffer Klink, a sister-in-law, about 9 o'clock, where she went down to his home after he had failed to come up town this morning as he had promised last night.
Mrs. Klink on entering the house found the rooms filled with gas fumes and after a search found the body in the cellar behind the furnace where there is a gas burner. Mrs. Mitchell had left the house at 5 a.m. to open the cafe and had not been back to the house.
Coronor [can't read name] was called to the scene and pronounced the case suicide. A note was left showing that he had such intentions. The contents of the note were not revealed.
Mr. Mitchell was born January 26, 1878 at Mt. Vernon where he spent his early life. He came to Marion in March 1881 and had been a resident here ever since. He was married to Anna Krauel in 1905, the couple had no children.
The deceased for a number of years was a switchman in the employ of the Milwaukee railroad and until he purchased the Lunch Cafe from Frank Gorsch several months ago followed the trade of a painter.
He was a member of the B.R.T. of Cedar Rapids No. 50.
Surviving are his widow, his mother, Mrs. Anna Mitchell and two brothers, Ed Mitchell and Frank Mitchell, both of Marion.
Funeral arrangements had not been made this morning.
