CIVIL WAR VET AND LONG TIME RESIDENT IS DEAD
Charles A. Mitchell died Wednesday at 4 p.m. after an illness of a few days, at his home 364 Seventh avenue. Mr. Mitchell was born in New York state, but owing to the fact that he was an orphan the records became lost and his exact age is not known. He was about eighty years. He was in the fifth Missouri calvary of the Civil war, serving three years and five months. He took part in sixteen major engagements and was in Andersonville prison five months and twenty days. He was married at Inland, Cedar county, March 31, 1872, and his wife survives him, together with three sons, Joseph and E.R. of Marion, and Frank of Whitefish, Mont. He was a blacksmith and ran a shop for years on the site where the public library now stands. Funeral arrangements have not been made, pending the arrival of the son, Frank, from Montana.
