MARION SWITCHMAN END LIFE WITH GAS

J.R. Nichols, Despondent, Commits Suicide While Wife if Absent.

J.R. Nichols, a Milwaukee switchman, while his wife was absent in Cedar Rapids this morning, went to an upstairs room, attached a piece of rubber hose to a gas jet, laid down on the bed, drew the clothes over his head, placed the hose on his mouth, and killed himself. Mr. Nichols had been under a doctor's care for some time and had been despondent.
When Mrs. Nichols left the house this morning about 7 o'clock, Mr. Nichols was in the living room and seemed to be feeling better. When she returned home at about ten o'clock, not finding her husband down stairs, and receiving no answer to her calls, she went upstairs and discovered him as described above. Corner King has been notified and will investigate the death this afternoon.
