H. Lee Layton, 78, passed away at 4:55 p.m. Wednesday at his home, 498 Eighteenth St., following a short illness.
He was born on May 2, 1874 at Clarence, the son of Samuel and Mary Elizabeth Kinney Layton. He moved to Marion in 1904 and was married October 12, 1920 at Marion to Ida Steele. For 35 years he worked for the Milwaukee railroad as an engine inspector, and following his retirement from the railroad he was employed from 1938 to 1950 as a Marion city policeman. He was a member of the Milwaukee Veterans association and of the Chief of Police association.
Surviving are his wife, two sons, Leo Layton of Glenwood, and LeRoy Layton of Portland, Ore., and three stepchildren, Elmer Layton of North Platte, Neb., Clarence Steele of National City, Calif. and Mrs. Ruby Chudzinski of Springville. He also leaves six grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Anna Burton of Clarence. A son, Merle Layton, passed away in 1934 and a brother, George passed away last August.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:30 p.m. Monday, at the Yocom-Murdoch Funeral Home by the Rev. C.V.R. DeJong and burial was in Oak Shade cemetery. Mrs. C.V.R. DeJong acted as soloist. Pallbearers were Leighton Ford, G.C. Clemenson, Gene Struchen and R.E. Cayler.
