John A. Grote, 88, of 436 Eighteenth St., passed away at 10:25 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, in a Cedar Rapids hospital.
He was born the son of Henry and Rebecca Frye Grote on Feb. 10, 1878 at Van Horne. On Dec. 5, 1900 he was married to Christina M. Jordt at Elberon. Mr. Grote came to Marion in 1904 and was an employee of the Milwaukee Road for 43 years until his retirement in 1947. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Marion, Marion Lodge #6 A.F. & A.M., Patmos Commandery, KT and Chapter No. 183, O.E.S. He was a 50 year member of the [can't read]
Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Benita Smith {can't read], a granddaughter[can't read]. Mr. Grote was the last of a large family from the Van Horne vicinity.
Services were 3 p.m. Tuesday March 1 at the Murdoch Chapel in Marion, conducted by Rev. {can't read] Interment was in Oak SHade cemetery.
