Retta Courtney Dies at Age 97
Miss Retta Courtney, 97, the last survivor of a prominent pioneer family, died Monday at 11:10 a.m. in a Cedar Rapids hospital following a long illness.
Born Oct. 4, 1858, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joel M. Courtney at the Courtney homestead, five miles east of Marion, her entire life had been spent in Marion.
In 1891 the family moved to 809 Sixth avenue, where Miss Courtney resided until she entered the hospital. She joined the Crabapple Methodist church as a young girl and was a lifelong member of the Methodist church.
She was the last survivor of seven children born to her parents.
Surviving are two nieces, Mrs. Glen Bryant, Peoria, Ill., Mrs. Elbert Tilson, Beverly Hills, Calif.; two nephews, Hobart Courtney, Encino, Calif., and Jack Courtney, La Crescenta, Calif., and a sister-in-law, Mrs. M.W. Courtney of Marion.
Memorial services will be conducted Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Murdoch chapel by the Rev. James P. Gable. Burial will be in Oak Shade cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
