E.H. WARD, CIVIL WAR VETERAN, DIES AT ADVANCED AGE

Former Constable and G.A.R. Commander Lived in Marion One Day More Than 53 Years.

After having lived in Marion just one day more than 53 yeras, Edwin H. Ward, Civil war veteran and well known in Linn county died at his home here at 1 a.m. today. He was 77 years and one month of age. Death was due to infirmaties of advanced age.
Mr. Ward was at one time constable of Marion township, and he was also commander of the Robert Mitchell post, G.A.R. His record in Civil war is a remarkable one, he having been in many engagements, and having been a prisoner of war on two occasions. He enlisted in Company A of the Third Iowa infantry June 10, 1861, and was discharged June 10, 1963. He re-enlisted in December of that year, this time in the Seventeenth Iowa and was discharged June 17, 1965.
For thirty years Mr. Ward was an employe[sic] of the Milwaukee railroad, ten years of this time having been spent as foreman of power inspection.
He was married to Samantha Holcomb at Marion in 1868, and the couple lived together fifty years last November. Surviving are his wife, two daughter, Mrs. George Eacker and Mrs. Frank T. Stafford, and a brother, J.W. Ward of Burlington. Four grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Methodist church, the Rev. A.H. Hanscom officiating. Burial will be in Oak Shade cemetery.
