Had Served As Street Commissioner For Four Mayors

O.E. Clemans, 72, for a number of years an employee of the city of Marion, passed away at his home, 1022 First avenue, early Monday morning, after an illness of several weeks. He was for ten years street commissioner, and served as sexton at Oak Shade cemetery for two years.
Mr. Clemans had lived in and near Marion for a long period of years, and had a wide acquaintance in this community. He served as street commissioner during the administrations of C.W. Biggs, A.E. Crew, O.M. Carson, and C.E. Drummond, and during the latter administration was also cemetery sexton.
BOrn in Lee county, Illinois, May 5, 1862, he left there when a young man to study telegraphy with his brother at Steward Station. He was married to Lillian Dennison March 1, 1883, at Steward, Ill. Mr. and Mrs. Clemans began housekeeping on a farm twelve miles north of Marion, staying there for two years before moving to Paris, where Mr. Clemans was engaged in the creamery business. The family moved back to Marion in 1886, lived here a year, and then moved to a farm at Linn Grove. Later they lived in Dickinson and Jones counties and in Nebraska, before returning to Marion to make their home in 1908.
Surviving are his widow and five children: William Clemans, Nelgh[sic], Nebr,; Verne Clemans, Marion; Carl, of Creighton, Nebr.; Mrs. Elmer Boyer, Marion; Mrs. C.J. Culver, Marion; fifteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren, and one brother, James Clemans, of Miami, Fla.
Funeral services were held from the Yocom chapel at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday. The Rev. Frank Ward of Cedar Rapids was in charge, assisted by the Rev. William H. Bridwell, pastor of the Marion Baptist church. Burial was in Oak Shade.
