LOVING TRIBUTE PAID MEMORY OF LATE HENRY WEIS
-------------
NEIGHBORS AND FRIENDS GATHERED FOR LAST SAD RITES SUNDAY AFTERNOON
----------------
Had Long Been a Resident of Linn County and Was Held in Highest Esteem
The high regard and esteem in which the late Henry Weis, whose tragic death saddened the entire community, was illustrated in a striking manner by the large assembly at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon to pay a last tribute to his memory. The services were conducted by Dr. J.P. Van Horne of Fayette, president of Upper Iowa university, assisted by Rev. Dr. Early A Baker pastor the the Marion church. The interment was in Oak Shade cemetery.
Henry John Weis was born in the Province of Saxony, Germany, November 23rd, 1859, and at the time of his death, October 8, 1924, had reached the age of 64 years, 10 months and 15 days. When 2 1/2 years old, he came with his father, Gottlieb Weis and his mother, Libbie Baumgartel Weis, to America and through Iowa City to Cedar Rapids, in 1862, locating on a farm just north of what is now known as Bever park, at about Twenty-second street.
He was married to Laura E. Bowers of Dakota, Ill., on March 31, 1887, and in October of the same year bought and moved to the Honaker farm four miles northeast of Marion, where he lived until the time of his death. Here were born his four children: George E. now of Marion; Clemen J., on the home farm; Roy H., of State college, Pa., and Mrs. Myrtle E. Williams of Marion.
The mother died, after a lingering illness, on September 23, 1896. He was married the second time, on February 23, 1899 to Rosa B. Bear, who died January 23, 1918, and who was a devoted wife and mother; and whose love for her foster children was most tender and serviceable, and was equalled[sic] only by their respect and and filial love for her her. She too passed away after years of intense and patient suffering. Besides the four children and two grandchildren he leaves of kin, two brothers, Edward J. Weis Sr. of Cedar Rapids, and Louis Weis Sr. of Marion, and two sisters, Mrs. Julius Markert St. of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. John O. Slaker of North Aurora, Ill.
