Thursday February 11, 1915 Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette
William Henry Combs, who bore the unusual distinction of being in continuous residence in Linn county since 1842, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. O.H. Fowler, 216 North Tenth street at 9 a.m. today after an illness of four weeks duration. Hardening of the arteries was the cause of death. Mr. Combs was born at Jeffersonville, Indiana in 1838 and was 82 years old at the time of death.
Mr. Combs came with his parents to Marion in 1842 from Indiana coming down the river to Muscatine and then completing the journey to Linn county on foot. The family suffered all the privations incident to pioneer life and Mr. Combs often was heard to say that the first winter which the family spent in Linn county was unusually severe and if it had not been for the deer meat which the Indians furnished the family frequently would have been without food.
When a young man Mr. Combs followed the trade of carpenter but later in life moved to a farm in Monroe township six miles north of Cedar Rapids where he remained until 1905 when he entered into retirement.
Mr. Combs was married in 1854 to Miss Harriet F. Brown of Marion who preceded him in death in 1908. Five children resulted from this union, three of whom survive. After the death of Mrs. Combs, Mr. Combs came to live at the home of his daughter.
The surviving relatives are two daughters, Mrs. A.A. McManus, of Palo, Mrs. O.H. Fowler of Cedar Rapids and one son, W.W. Combs of Cedar Rapids and one sister, Mrs. Henry Good of Kenwood Park. He also is survived by eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Shiloh cemetery Saturday at 2 p.m. the Rev. Walter M. White officiating.
