Sarah Catherina Ellenberger was born in Somerset, Somerset county, Pa., May 17, 1839.
In 1846 she moved with her parents to Fairfield county, Ohio, and later to Tiffin, Seneca county in the same state. Here she was married to J.W. Baughman, Oct. 3, 1858. The young couple settled at Washington, Ill.
Several years afterward they moved to a farm near El Paso, Ill., and later to the town of El Paso. In 1892 they came to Iowa, locating in the city of Marion, which has since been the family home. To this union was born four children, all of whom are living: Charles W., Alburnett; Mrs. W.H. Seidel and Mrs. W.G. Thomas, both of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. R.A. Goudy, Petersburg, Va. She also leaves her husband, with whom she spent fifty nine years of mutual love and helpfulness; one brother, S.F. Ellenberger of Baldwin, Ia., and one sister, Mrs. J.J. Yambert, El Paso, Ill. There are five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
She was converted in childhood and united with the Evangelical church. After moving to El Paso, Ill., she and her husband united with the Methodist Episcopal church, of which she remained a fathful and interested member.
Death came at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 13, 1917, after months of failing health.
Previous to her final illness, she had for ten years been unable to go about as formerly and had suffered greatly.
Her patience and cheerfulness under these trying conditions were remarkable, and was a standing testimony to the reality and the value of her religious faith.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Methodist Episcopal church of Marion, conducted by the Rev. A.H. Hanscom. Burial was in Oakshade [sic] cemetery.
