Obituary of Mrs. Susan Oakley
Susan Morgan, daughter of John and Martha Morgan, was born in Bradford county, Pa., December 17, 1826, and passed away peacefully in her home in this city February 15, 1911, being 84 years, 1 month and 29 days of age. Her early years were spent in the place of her birth in Pennsylvania.
In 1848 she was united in marriage to Mr. Merritt W. [sic] Oakley, and in 1855 they came to Center Point, Linn county, Iowa, with their two children, Miss Alive [sic] and George N. Oakley, where they remained about three years, when they came to Marion, and made it their future home.
Mrs. Oakley was a woman of culture and refinement and was one of the first public school teachers in Benton county, Iowa, where she taught several terms. She was also a devoted and consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church from early life, and was very active in all branches of church work. For more than twenty years she was a teacher in the Sunday school, was also deeply interested in the Epworth League, and was intimately associated with the growth of the Methodist church in Marion, indeed, it would be difficult to write the history of Methodism in Marion without giving her a prominent place. For several years she was a member of the adult Sunday school Bible class from whose circle she will be greatly missed.
Mrs. Oakley became very frail during the past years, and since December was very ill and suffered greatly but in her declining years as well as in her sickness, she was patient and submissive, retaining her cheerful spirit until the end came in peace and triumph.
Mrs. Oakley survived her husband about fourteen years, since which time she has lived with her daughter. She leaves her two children, Mrs. Alice Sisson of Marion, and Mr. George Oakley of Chicago, and two grandchildren, Hal C. Bixby and Mary Oakley, residing in Chicago.
