William Allen Austin was born in Mt. Vernon, Knox county,Ohio, August 20, 1836 and died at his home, six miles north of Marion, Dec. 4, 1922.
HE came to Muscatine, in 1853 and later moved to the farm on which he died after having resided there for nearly 50 years.
During the Civil war in 1861, he enlisted as a corporal in Co. K, Ninth Iowa infantry, serving 18 months until wounded in the battle of Pea Ridge.
He was married April 2, 1863 to Miss Julalia Lucore who died Nov. 27, 1917.
Twelve children were born to this union: Anna, Mattie, Margaret, Kate, William, Sarah, Ina, Edward, Frank, John, Merle and Sam. One, Anna, is dead.
He is also survived by 33 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. All the children except Mrs. Ray Jordan, Central City and Frank, Great Falls, Mont. were present when their father died, these two being prevented from attending by illness.
The children present were Mrs. J.G. Coons, La Plata, Mo.; Mrs. S.W. Gano, Faith, S.D.; Mrs. J.D. Crew, Omaha; Mrs. S.B. Scott, Marion; Mrs. Ina Dye Minor, Magrath, Canada; William B. and Sam, Marion; Ed, Alexandria, S.D.; and John, Cleveland, O.
