Retired Milwaukee Carman Dies in CR Nursing Home

Winfield Scott Starbuck, a retired railroad carman, passed away at 9:05 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at a Cedar Rapids nursing home following a long illness.
He was born one of six children to Shubel and Rebecca Wharton Starbuck on February 7, 1860 on a farm near Bussey, Ia. Mr. Starbuck was married October 26, 1882 at Marengo, to Miss Manetta H. Drake and they moved to Marion in 1892 from Tama. He has resided in Marion since that time except for ten years, 1915 to 1925 when he and his family lived in Oxford Junction.
He retired from the railroad in 1935 and Mrs. Starbuck passed away on August 27, 1942 at their home 463 Seventh Street. Mr. Starbuck was a member of Unit 29, Retired and Veteran Railway employees and of Local 311 Brotherhood of Railway Carmen of America.
Surviving are three daughters: Mrs. Bert (Alta) Taylor, Mrs. L.H. (Lottie) Beintema and Mrs. L.M. (Grace) Phelps all of Marion. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Richard W. Diederich, Los Angeles, Calif., who was reared in his grandparents home after the death of his mother; Mrs. William (Leone) Rouse, Santa Ana, Calif., Eugene D. Travis, Baton Rouge, La., and John S. Beintema, Rock Island, Ill., and six great grandchildren. Two daughters, Sarah M. Diedrich and Hazel L. Travis preceded him in death.
Memorial services were conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 at the Murdoch chapel by the Rev. James P. Gable, pastor of the Marion Methodist church and interment was in Oak Shade cemetery.
