6 September 1945 - The Tipton Advertiser

Harry Dee, prominent farmer, was fatally injured Saturday afternoon while hauling hay at his home west of Mt. Vernon. It was believed that Mr. Dee had been hauling hay from his home to a farm across the road when his team bolted, the hayrack striking the gate post and throwing Mr. Dee from the load.

Harry W. Dee was born at Princeton, Illinois, on November 19, 1870. Early in childhood he moved with his parents to Sheridan, Iowa, in Poweshiek county. He attended Grinnell Academy, Grinnell, Iowa, and business college at Princeton, Illinois. He started farming when he was 21 years old at Sheridan, Ia. In October, 1893, he was married to Evelyn Wolcott. To this union were born five sons: Glenn, Harold, Paul, Ralph and James. In 1912 he moved to Mt. Vernon to further the education of his family. Shortly after moving to Mr. Vernon, Evelyn Dee passed away.

Mr. Dee was always active in the Methodist church, both at Sheridan and Mt. Vernon. He was a leader in the Sheridan community, assisting in building the church and was superintendent of the Sunday school for many years. In 1916 he and Elsie Rigby Maxwell were united in marriage. With the exception of a few years spent in South Dakota, Mr. Dee spent the remainder of his life close to the Mt. Vernon community. For many years he taught a boys' class in the Mt. Vernon Methodist Sunday school. He is survived by his widow, two stepsons, Lewis and Buell Maxwell, five sons and nine grandchildren. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Charles Wolcott and Mrs. Walter Hayes, both of Sheridan, Iowa.
