The Marion Register December 1, 1916
One by one. Tuesday about 10 a.m. just after the REGISTER was in press, news came of the passing of Mr. Edwin Garretson at his home on north 11th street. He was a civil war veteran, a member of Robert Mitchell Grand Army Post and of the Christian church.
He was a native of Pennsylvania, born in May, 77 years ago. He was a member of the 21st cavalry regiment of his native state. He came to Iowa in 1864 and engaged in farming near Lafayette. He was an industrious man, a good citizen, than whom there were none better. He accumulated a competence and for a period of 17 years was steward of the Linn County Home, during which time Mrs. Garretson was matron. Under their management it became, as it has since continued to be, the best institution of its kind in Iowa. Declining to serve longer, they established an ideal home in Marion where they have since resided. No better man, no better woman, ever lived than Mr. and Mrs. Garretson.
When he heard of this even, one of the leading merchants of the city said to a large number of people in his store, "Marion has lost its best citizen," and there were none to dispute. Since locating in town he was overseer of the poor. Courteous and considerate in a kindly way, he endeared himself to all with whom he had personal or official relations. His long and useful life is ended, but his memory will be cherished as the years come and go by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. C.A. Plummer and Miss Della Garretson, who has all her life time remained with her parents.
Hundreds of friends in the city and hundreds more in the county unite in sincerest sympathy for the bereaved family.
"Friend after friend departs,
Who hath not lost a friend."
No one ever lost a truer friend than Edwin Garretson.
Funeral services this, Friday, afternoon at 2:30 at the family home, 1466 north 11th street. Owing to the illness of Rev. L.M. Starr, Rev. T.L. Schuler of Cedar Rapids will conduct the services.
