MILWAUKEE SWITCHMAN KILLED UNDER ENGINE
----------------------------
James H. McKnight, a C.M. & St. P. switchman, was killed this morning about 8:30 while on duty. He was riding on the foot-board of a switch engine with Engineer R.R> Stevens in charge, switching on the supply yard track. When the engine passed over the crossing at South Eleventh street, the foot-board apparently caught on some obstruction, bending it down and throwing Mr. McKnight under the wheels. Both legs and one hand were cut off and he died shortly after while being taken to the hospital.
Mr. McKnight had been a faithful employe of the Milwaukee many years, and during his service has had several accidents. He had only been at his duties as switchman a short time, having been confined to his home several weeks by injuries caused by a heavy jack falling on his feet, and while out on his crutches one day he slipped and broke his arm in two places.
He is survived by his wife, a daughter Margaret, and son James Jr. Mr. McKnight was a member of Marion lodge No. 6, A.F. and A.M., the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and other orders.
