Charles H. Townsend, 56, veteran of World War I, passed away at 6:30 A.M. Sunday in an Independence hospital following a long illness.
Mr. Townsend was born on December 18, 1893 at Bertram, the son of John and Mary Paul Townsend. He lived in Marion for a short time when his folks moved here from Bertram. Of late years he had been farming and made his home with sisters in Central City and Cedar Rapids.
On December 19, 1917 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served until he was discharged on July 22, 1919 at Great Lakes. He later reenlisted and served four years.
Mr. Townsend never married and was a member of the Bertram Methodist church. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Ella Knapp of Cedar Rapids. Two sisters preceded him in death, Mrs. Lula May comely passed away January 19, 1950 at Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Miranda Blaine at Marion in April 1938.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Yocom-Murdoch Chapel by the Rev. Clyde Scott of Walker. Burial was in the family lot in Oak Shade Cemetery.
