Roy Stanton, 48 Died Tuesday at His Marion Home
Roy Stanton, 48, died Tuesday at his home, 333 Sixth street in Marion. He had been bedfast for sometime, having first taken ill in February, 1934. For eight weeks, Mr. Stanton had received treatment, and had an operation performed during that time. A month ago his condition became serious.
Mr. Stanton was the oldest son of Benjamin and Catherine Stanton and was born in Marengo, Nov. 25, 1887. When eleven years of age his eyesight failed, and on Christmas morning he awoke to find the world in total darkness. He had gone as far as the sixth grade. The next year he went to Vinton to the school for the blind, attending for ten terms and working there for one summer. While in attendance at the school he learned the broom-maker's trade, basket-work, carpet-weaving, mesh work and other handcraft.
He came to Marion in 1901. He was employed at the Handy Sack Baler company for two years where he operated a drill. He became night watchman for the Stotts Signal company, and he served in that capacity for a period of three years. Three years ago he opened a general repair shop, and until his health failed, did any number of intricate jobs that would seem impossible for one without sight.
Surviving him are his mother, Mrs. Catherine Stanton of Marion; three brothers, Ralph of Cedar Rapids, and Earl and Raymond of Marion; one niece, Miss Ruth Stanton of Marion; and three nephews, Carl Stanton of Denison, Darrell Stanton living in the west, and Jack Stanton of Cedar Rapids.
Funeral services were to be held today at the Yocom chapel. The Rev. W.E. Fisher of the Presbyterian church will officiate. Burial will be made in the Oak Shade cemetery.
