Boy Who Drowned Near Montour is Buried at Marion
Toldeo, IA, July 19--The funeral of Forrest Stanton, resident at State Juvenile home the last three years, who drowned in a fall from a railway trestle near Montour into a pond, was conducted Wednesday afternoon at Marion, home of his grandmother, and burial was there. A brief service was conducted there.
The boy, with a companion Garth Balcom, had left the house without permission early Monday morning and hidden in the woods near here. They feared to cross the trestle because of likelihood of being seen and Stanton went across on the under side, hand over hand. He lost his hold when returning to his companion. Balcom, unable to swim, threw in a rope the lads had, but it was too short. He then hurried to Montour and gave the alarm, the section crew responding and a young man diving for the body. Efforts at resuscitation failed.
The boy was one of three brothers who came to the state home three years ago. The other two are with Iowa families. The parents and grandmother also survive.
