OCTOGENARIAN DIES
Nathan Caldwell Passes Away at the Age of Eighty Seven Years, Nine Months and Fourteen Days at his Home South-west of Center Point on Wednesday Morning at Two a.m.
Nathan Caldwell was born in Nicholas County, Ky., July 7, 1803, and was the son of Thomas and Sarah Caldwell who were natives of Pennsylvania. This worthy couple were the parents of eight children and the subject of our issue was the third child by this union.
The deceased was united in marriage, February 6, 1845, with Miss Margarate Van Alsdale who still survives him.
This couple became the parents of nine children, only eight are now living.
Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell emigrated to Iowa from Indiana in 1853 and settled upon the present farm southwest of this city two miles, this early date of settlement places the deceased among our early settlers. He has by his industry and perseverance accumulated a fine farm of 335 acres.
Mr. Caldwell was of the republican faith and was always counted upon to fill his place at the polls whenever the right of suffrage was extended. He has held the several township offices and was always looked upon as a man with the highest appreciation by his neighbors. He was known far and wide as being a man of great generosity and hospitality toward his fellowman. No act of such wherein his assistance could alleviate passed by without his part being fulfilled.
He became blind in 1875 caused by neuralgia and has been without the use of this organ for about sixteen years which has deprived him of enjoying the comforts in store for him made through his energies in earlier life, and also of the privilege of the news of the day as it once was enjoyed by him. After this organ failed him he was very tenderly cared for by the members of his family and as they were his constant watchers now he is gone he will be missed, his soul has returned to its maker. He was called uncle by all who knew him and the public will miss him from their circle.
The funeral services were held at the house by N. A. Mershon assisted by Geo. Kolb of the Evangelical Church on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The text chosen for the occasion was from Gen. 47,9. The remains were interred in the cemetery at this place.
submitter's note: Burial was at Center Point Cemetery.
