DIED FROM EXCESSIVE DRINKING
S. L. Dows, Jr., of Cedar Rapids, son of one of the wealthiest men in Iowa and brother of Col. W. G. Dows, late of the 49th Infantry, died Wednesday from the effects of the excessive use of liquor. Monday afternoon he came to the office where his father and brother were sitting, and his condition was at once apparent to them. Several times he has threatened to shoot when under the influence of liquor and a policeman was called in to help take care of him. As the officer came young Dows made a dive for his office desk and grabbed a revolver. During a struggle that followed the revolver was discharged, the bullet taking off the little finger on Col. Dows’ right hand and grazing his leg. The unfortunate young man died from the effects of his spree a few hours later.
