I am a home historian doing research on the history of 1019 Lafayette Street in Denver, Colorado. The builder and first owner of the house in 1905 was Estelle Hawley Eddy, who city directories reveal as a "christian science practitioner." Obviously I am led to believe (or hope) that she had some direct connection with the founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy.
Research so far has uncovered that Estelle was born in Iowa on 8 Dec 1868, lived in Colorado in the early 1900s, and died in California on 24 Sep 1953. Her mother's maiden name was Stewart, her father's surname was Eddy, and Hawley was her middle name. She was also sometimes called Stella. I know she was married at some point in the late 19th century, but have yet to find a husband.
Estelle's mother's name in 1920 was Lucy H Atlee, but her maiden name was Stewart. I believe she may also have married a Hawley, because her son's name was Fred H Hawley... but the fact that Fred's older sister (Estelle) had Hawley as her middle name makes that just a bit suspicious.
In 1900, Lucy was living with her husband Joseph B (?) Atlee in Fort Madison, Iowa. He was 62; she 52. They had been married for 15 years. Lucy had borne 4 children, only 2 of which were still alive. I think he worked in a saw mill. They also had a 20 year old domestic servant named Ida Lohman from Iowa. Lucy was in Fort Madison in an 1895 state census as well.
By 1920, Estelle, her mother Lucy, and her brother Fred had all made it out to Los Angeles. All three had lost their spouses to death, and soon lived with each other.
Any help that you could provide in locating Estelle’s father, any of the circumstances around her mother's remarriages, or relatives that might help to confirm or deny a relationship between Mary Baker Eddy and this Fort Madison woman would be most appreciated.
