In Response To: CORRECTION ON INFO (Ruth Dresser)

Well, its been a year since my original query - and here's everything I've found so far on Daniel Rider, for those who may be interested. Please feel free to contact me with corrections, additions and updates!

Daniel was my paternal great-great-great-grandfather, and his son John was my great-great-grandfather. Daniel's father is still a mystery to me, and remains the primary focus of my research - any information on his forebears would be enormously appreciated!

----------------------------
Daniel Rider was born 28 June 1806, in Jefferson, OH. He married Jemima Street (b. 2 Jan/Feb 1807, VA) in Columbiana County, Ohio, 18 February 1832. They had at least twelve children in Ashtabula County between 1833 and 1853.

Jesse Rider - Male - b. Ashtabula Cty OH, 1833
John Rider - Male - b. Ashtabula Cty OH, 1834
Joah Rider - Male - b. Ashtabula Cty OH, 1835
William Rider - Male - b. Ashtabula Cty OH, 1837
Jacob Rider - Male - b. Ashtabula Cty OH, 1839
Henry Rider - Male - b. Ashtabula Cty OH, 1841
George Rider - Male - b. Ashtabula Cty OH, 1843
Margaret Rider - Female - b. Ashtabula Cty OH, 1845
Daniel Rider - Male - b. Ashtabula Cty OH, 1847
Columbus Rider - Male - b. Ashtabula Cty OH, 1849
Washington Rider - Male - b. Ashtabula Cty OH, 1851
(1870 Census says he was born 1849)
Susanna Katherine Rider - Male - b. Ashtabula Cty OH, 1853
William Rider - Male - b. PA or OH, 1855 (grandson?)

The 1870 census states that Daniel's youngest son (possibly grandson), William was born circa 1855 in Pennsylvania, but a later census states that he was born in Ohio. I believe it is most likely that all were born in Ashtabula County, Ohio.

Sometime between 1855 and 1861 at least some of the Rider family moved to Lee County, Iowa. Three of Daniel's sons (Henry, Daniel Jr. and William) served in Iowa during the Civil War. Henry was a Private or Corporal, and Daniel was a Private, both were in Company A, 19th Infantry. William was a Private in Company H, 6th Infantry (Mustered at Burlington July 17, 1861). The 1870 Census lists Daniel Rider (but not Jemima?), as well as sons Jesse, John, Washington, and William, and daughter Margaret, living in Montrose Township, Lee County, Iowa. Jesse was a carpenter, and was still living in Montrose Township in 1880.

According to "The History of Lee County" (1879), page 763, Daniel Rider (not clear whether father or son) was a farmer on Section 19 of Montrose Township. A map of Montrose Township shows a School in section 19, which may have been where the younger Rider children were educated.

Daniel moved from Ohio, possibly to Pennsylvania (circa 1854), and finally to Iowa between 1855-1861. We know that his son John (b. 2 June 1831, OH) was married to Elizabeth Ann Jarvis (his second wife) in Jackson County, Ohio, August 1863, so it appears as though the family moved to Iowa in at least two separate parts. It may be that Daniel moved to Iowa with certain of his children between 1855 and 1861, and that John followed sometime after his wedding in August 1863. We know John was still in Iowa in 1870, but he moved back east with Elizabeth sometime around 1874, in a covered wagon, settling in Rush Hollow, Ona, Cabell County, West Virginia (Big Seven Mile). He died 28 February 1912.

Daniel Rider died 26 August 1878 in Galland, Lee County, Iowa. Jemima died the year before, 24 October 1877, also in Galland. They are both buried in Galland Cemetery, along with their daughter Susanna K[ate] Rider.
