Montrose in Retrospect by Mrs. Russell Hancock

KITE, GALLAND, MILLER, HANCOCK

Several years ago, I was able to purchase a book written and compiled by Mrs. Russell Hancock entitled, Montrose in Retrospect. It is a collection of articles she wrote for the newspaper in Montrose. The first of two articles in the book is about the beginnings of Lee County and Montrose or as it was originally called, Mount of Roses. The other article is about the Old Fort Des Moines. Within both articles, there is mention of early pioneers who came to Lee County. Mrs. Hancock mentions my great, great grandfather, John Kite of Kentucky as migrating to Lee County in 1837 at the age of 16 to 17. My question is where did she obtained this information? I have looked and had others look for documentation to verify this information and date, but so far nothing has been found. I do know John Kite had some sort of connection to Isaac Galland and that his uncle was George Miller, a Mormon bishop in Nauvoo who was living in Montrose in 1840. Any help in this area would be appreciated.
