I am most interested in finding data on my ggggrandmother, Maria GALARNEAU, who states on the WI National Census, that she was born in IA in the 1820's. The story in our family is that one of four people (RICHARD, LA POINTE, GALARNEAU, or FOUNTAINE) who were married in Pairie DuChein, WI was a Native American. I thought maybe Maria was that one....no way to prove the theory if I can't find a record of the GALARNEAUs in Iowa.
I know many of my ancestors/relatives ended up in Keokuk, Lee, IA. after living in MO, IL, CO etc. .... the DAMANs, WELCHes, RICHARDs and LA POINTEs and FOUNTAINE's. As a matter of fact, some still live there. My gr uncles and gr grandfather worked in a sugar factory in Keokuk in the very eary 1900s. My gr grandfather and gr grandmother, Eli RICHARD and wife Idel (Adele) FOUNTAINE RICHARD, are buried in the IA National Cemetary. My gr grandfather, Francis Marion DAMAN was in a veterans hospital there that later burned down... would also like to know more about his time there...Is there any way I can find out the Indian tribes that were in Lee County in the 1800s? What churches were there that kept birth, death or marriage records? What territory was IA in 1820?
Can you give me any answers or further information? My name is Marti Wade. I was in your fair city in 1936 to visit my great Aunt Lena and again in 1990 with my husband to check out some of my ancestral roots and enjoyed it so, found the people very wonderful!
