I am trying to find out what became of my Grt Grandfather's youngest brother. The three boys Robt.KIDNEY 1861,Frederick KIDNEY 1864 and Charles KIDNEY 1866 were turned over to an orphanage here in NY,just after the Civil War ended. The mother died in 1867, and my GrtGrtGrandfather, I am surmising, after two enlistments in the war could not take care of them.
They appear together in the 1870 NY census in the orphanage .About the age of ten, my grt grandfather Robert and "his brother" were "turned out" to farms. My Robert to a farm here in NY, our family and his descendants are still in a ten mile radius of the area. I suspect Frederick was "the brother" mentioned above as I traced him later to 1900 NJ State Prison. This is still within a 100 miles. After that I've lost him in the censuses. My grandmother only knew "the brother" as 'Jay", and nothing about prison was ever mentioned so I'm not sure which brother "Jay" is referring to and which brother was actually lost. Which brings me to you.
I have traced Charles Kidney to 1880 Iowa census where he is 15 yrs old, born in NY, laborer, servant. Thru several more censuses, all Albia,Monroe CO. to 1920 Albia, Monroe living with the "Long" family. Five years later he appears in the 1925 census of Fort Madison....the census questionare says institution..and is hand written Fort Madison....I think he went to prison as well..after this 1925 I can not locate him again. This also states he's 59 yrs old and been in Iowa 51 yrs..born in NY..Does not know the Names of either parents... I think this man was probably on one of the "Orphan Trains' coming out of NY. Well. I was hoping you might find some reference to him in the materials you have from Monroe Co. I would like to find out where he is buried or his death date. I could then send for the vital records if I could find the date. It would be interesting to find out what he did in Monroe Co to send him to F.Madison. In one of the census for Albia, it stated he was a laborer for a Theater Company. Also would you have any idea how to send or request of old prison records? Thanks for any help you can be
