I am searching for biographical information about William M. G. Torrence of Keokuk. I have worked out the following POSSIBLE bio: He was born in PA. He served in the Kentucky Mounted Volunteers, Company G, in the Mexican War in 1846-47. I don't know what his connection was to KY. He then is on the 1850 and 1860 Census with his wife, Ellen, in Keokuk, Lee Co, Iowa. He was a school teacher in Keokuk in the 1850s. In the Civil War, he served as a Captain (promoted to Major) in the Iowa 1st Cavalry, then a Lt Col (promoted to Col) in the Iowa 30th Infantry in the Union Army and died in 1863. Ellen Torrence applied for a pension as his widow. He had four surviving children: Mary E, James Wayland, William, Martha. After his death, I read, Koekuk erected a memorial to him, a school was named for him, and there was a Torrence GAR unit.
Can anyone correct or enlarge on this biography or suggest other sources? I am particularly interested in the Kentucky connection. How or why did he serve in the Kentucky volunteers in the Mexican War? Is there an obituary anywhere for him?
Thanks - Patricia J. McCarty, Louisville KY
