I’m continuing a 40 year search for the roots of my grandfather who we knew as Newton Vorice Lowe, though at this point I have no proof that this was his name before arriving in Bonaparte, Van Buren county, to marry my grandmother in April 1905.
However, he apparently was working in a restaurant in Keokuk in 1904 or 1905 called the Stanton Bros. Restaurant which was located at 28 S. Water St., Keokuk. From city directory info, it appears to have operated in this location from about 1900-1908. My grandmother often visited McComb relatives in Keokuk and I suspect this is how they met.

http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~4fathers/Lowe/NVLowe/nvlowecook.htmMy question involves early records from that period of time. I’m pretty certain he would not have owned property. But what type of records might there be on an ordinary common laborer at that time? Would there be any kind of employee record reporting? Any “head tax” for all residents? Any trail you can think of?
Also, does anyone know what month the Iowa State 1905 census was recorded for that area and if it is readable?
Any ideas or suggestions would be most appreciated. Please see the link below for other photos and details of this mystery.
Who was Newton Vorice Lowe?
