AN OLD CITIZEN DEAD
William Perdew Succumbs Suddenly Sunday to Heart Disease at Iconium, Iowa
William Perdew, one of the best known citizens of Keokuk, died Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thomas Townsend, at Iconium, Ia., where he had been visiting for a year. He was troubled with heart disease and died very suddenly.
His age was sixty-eight years, six months and thirteen days, and he had lived in Keokuk for a very long time. He was a member of Torrence post, having been a good soldier during the civil war, and served as junior vice commander of the post. He was at one time president of the Keokuk Typographical union, and stood high in the estimation of all who knew him.
Back in the late sixties, he was forman of the Consitution when it was a morning paper under the guidance of Judge Claggett. He served in the mechanical department of this paper continuously until typesetting machines were put in less than two years ago. He had all the virtues of the old-time printers, and was honorable as a man can be, fair minded and always very popular in the office. He was widely read, and had a vast fund of information which his modesty allowed him to seldom display.
All who knew him join in the grief of the surviving relatives. He leaves four daughters, Mrs. Townsend, Mrs. H.C. Duncan and Mrs. Hubert Lobrecht, of this city, and Mrs. Rev. J.M. Bennington, of Slater, Mo. His son is Rev. W.H. Perdew, of the Mothodist church, now living at Boston, Mass.
