J. L. PATTERSON TAKES HIS LIFE HERE YESTERDAY
Well-known Local Shoe Repair Man Shoots Self Through the Right Temple with Pistol Last Night---Inquest Held Today.
The sound of a shot, apparently coming from the garage at the rear of her residence, 1528 Morgan Street, at 7 o'clock last night, caused Mrs. John Opstelton to enter the building where she found her brother, John L. Patterson, dead from a
bullet wound in his right temple. A .32 calibre revolver was used by the well-known Keokuk shoe repair man to end his life. No motive for the suicide could be supplied. Acting coroner E. E. Hawkes was called to view the body and called an
inquest which was held at the Keokuk Funeral Home this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The body was removed to that place. John L. Patterson was born in Keokuk on November 14, 1883, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Patterson. All of his life,
with the exception of a few years in Texas, was spent in this city. He has operated a shoe repair shop at 1120 Main street for the past eight years. Twenty-five years ago he was united in marriage with Bessie Belknap. One child, a daughter,
was born to this union but died in infancy. In his youth he attended the United Presbyterian church and was a member of the Eagle Lodge of Masons. Surviving him are three sisters, Mrs. R. B. Irving, of Glendale, California; Mrs. Addie
Griffith, of Lapeer, Michigan, and Mrs. John Opstelton, of Keokuk. The body will remain at the Keokuk Funeral Home until funeral arrangements are completed upon the arrival of the sister from California.
