Obituary for George W. Raines
One of Lee county's pioneers is dead. Geo. W. Raines had lived in Croton for forty-one years; he was one of the old citizens of Lee. He was born in Bamebridge [sic-Bainbridge], Ross County, Ohio, Jan 28, 1828; died Feb 10, 1898. He was 70 years and 13 days old. He was married to Sarah Ann Allen in Ohio; they migrated to the west in May, 1855, taking the old route down the Ohio river and up the Mississippi to Alexandria, MO., landing there in May and from there to Athens, Clark County.
His wife died June 25, 1892, six years ago and he seems to have been preparing to follow the one he was endeared to in life. He had been suffering for a long time but he bore all with Christian fortitude. He leaves behind to mourn his loss three sons and one daughter and nine grandchildren, three living in Croton, Allen Francis and Mattie and Elmer of Oskaloosa, all were there to soothe the fathers's fond brow till the end sweetly came to call him home. ~ Keokuk Paper, Feb 24, 1898 pg. 12-1
