LOWELL - James E. McCampbell, 53, a Boston University campus police officer for more than 13 years, died Monday, apparently of a heart attack, in St. Joseph's Hospital here.
Mr. McCampbell in 1976 received his campus police basic training course. He was promoted to a special police officer in 1979.
In 1976, he received an award for contributing significantly to the development and success of the Boston University Homecoming Festival.
Born in Keokuk, Iowa, he had lived in Dorchester for many years before moving to Lowell 10 years ago. Mr. McCampbell was recently appointed as an auxiliary officer to the Lowell Police Department. He was a veteran of the Army in the Korean war.
He leaves his wife, Jane L. (Williams); a daughter, Marine Corps Reserve Sgt. Loveeta Kezia Johnson, of Lowell; two sisters, Virginia Juanita Dawson of Burlington, Iowa, and Ruby R. Rose of Mattapan; four brothers, Joseph E. of Burlington, Iowa, Kenneth D. of Chicago, Leroy J. of Burlington, Iowa, and Joseph Raymond McCampbell of Arizona.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Morse Funeral Home, Lowell. Burial will be in Lowell Cemetery.
